Vitamin K1 and K2 are important in activating osteocalcin, a part of the bone matrix that helps to bind calcium and phosphorus. Insufficient vitamin K in the diet causes a decrease in the binding of these critical minerals and can cause bone density problems.
Vitamin K1 and K2 are available in fresh pasture, but they are highly unstable and break down in the sun or when grass begins to wilt or die off for winter. Hay is not an adequate source of natural vitamin K. Therefore, horses that do not have access to fresh pasture (through stabling or the winter months) are likely to be deficient in Vitamin K, leading to a reduction in bone density and strength.
Bone density loss can occur within 7-10 days of pasture not being available.
